Making sure your carpets are constantly kept clean and in good condition is very important to most home owners.  When the carpets in the home are clean and in good condition it makes the entire place appear in better shape.  Besides the aesthetic aspect there is also the every important health benefit of having carpets free of dust and allergens.  Always remember that by cleaning your carpets with proper technique you also extend its look and its life.

The most important and simple thing you can do is ensure you vacuum your carpet on a weekly basis.  The vacuum must have strong suction and rotating brushes on the power head to ensure the dirt is loosened from the carpet fibres and well extracted.  For areas with lots of furniture or stairs it a good canister vacuum is recommended for getting into all those hard to reach places and for easier and better extraction of the dirt on the stairs.

Most carpet manufacturers recommend that every six to twelve months carpets are professionally cleaned.  One of the popular ways is through carpet steam cleaning also known as hot water extraction such as that offered by Dura Cleaning.  This eliminates dirt and dust particles from your carpet which not only are harmful for your health but which also rub against the carpet fibres eroding them and causing permanent damage.

If you have a spill on your carpet be sure to clean it up immediately.  The best way to do this is to dab it with a clean, white cloth or paper towel.  Never rub a fresh stain that occurs on your carpet and do not treat it with any other cleaning product.  This will only set the stain in the fibres and cause the stain to become permanent.  Call a professional carpet cleaning service such as Dura Cleaning to properly treat and extract stains from your carpet to avoid costly damage.

In order to avoid color fading from your carpet always ensure to protect it from direct sunlight.  This discoloration of the carpet fibres is not reversible and cannot be cleaned.  Always remember to draw the blinds on very sunny days to avoid overexposure.

Always try to use carpet protector pads under heavy furniture and change its placement often to avoid permanent damage to the carpet fibres.  Rearranging furniture also creates different traffic patterns through your home and allows for a more even wear of the carpet.

Protect the carpet in the transitional areas by using area mats or rugs which can easily be replaced or cleaned if excessive dirt is tracked on them.
